You may not be spending much time in the yard right now due to the severely cold winter, but that's going to change in a few months. Once spring arrives, you'll want to get outside to take care of your home and yard maintenance. When that happens, you'll need to know that your garage door is up to the task. The best way to do that is to provide some late winter maintenance. Harsh winter weather can really take its toll on your garage door. Here are some simple steps you can take to get your garage door ready for spring.

Give It a Close Look

If you're like most people, you don't spend much time looking at your garage door. Unfortunately, that can be a big mistake, especially when you're trying to get it ready for spring. Taking a close look at your garage door will allow you to identify all the problems you might have overlooked. For instance, an icy driveway might have caused one of your cars to slide into the garage door during the winter. A close inspection will help you find damage that will need to be repaired.

Inspect the Torsion Springs

If you've experienced a particularly brutal winter this year, the springs on your garage door may need to be replaced. Extreme weather can cause your springs to freeze up, which can undermine their ability to open and close properly. Not only that, but exposure to moisture can cause them to develop rust and corrosion. Now that you're inspecting your garage door and getting it ready for spring, take a closer look at the springs. If you can see visible rust or corrosion, or there's a distinct squealing sound from the springs when you open or close your garage door, you'll need to call your service technician right away. Your springs may need to be replaced before spring.

Tidy Up the Tracks

If your garage door has been under a lot of pressure this winter, you'll need to tidy up the tracks before spring arrives. The constant use can cause major problems for the tracks. First, test all the nuts and bolts to make sure they're all as tight as they should be. Second, sweep away any dirt that might have accumulated during the winter. Finally, apply some fresh lubricant to your tracks. These steps will help ensure that your tracks are ready to go this spring.
